The most luscious ambient sounds I ever made came out of my Wavestation. the bloke who sold me mine described it as like trying to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, through the letterbox, with a paintbrush on the end of a pole. Its primary innovation was Wave Sequencing, a method of multi-timbral sound generation in which different PCM waveform data are played successively, resulting in continuously evolving sounds.

The Wavestation is really hard work to program. The Korg Wavestation is a vector synthesis synthesizer first produced in the early 1990s and later re-released as a software synthesizer in 2004. The hardware does have the nostalgia though. The VST version actually sounds better IMHO, and is easier to program as it doesn't have the limitiations of the hardware.
